የቤተ ክርስቲያን ሥዕሎች ታሪካዊ ፋይዳ

የኢትዮጵያ ቤተ ክርስቲያንን ልዩ ከሚያደርጓት ጠባያቷ አንዱ የሀገሪቱ የታሪክ ማኅደር መሆንዋ ነው፡፡ በአፍሪካ ታሪክ ላይ ጥናት ያደረጉ ምሁራን ከሚስማሙባቸው ነጥቦች አንዱ የአፍሪካ ታሪክ እና ቅርስ በሚገባ ተጠብቆ እንዳይቆይ ካደረጉት ነገሮች አንዱ እንደ ኢትዮጵያ ቤተ ክርስቲያን ኃላፊነት ወስዶ የሚጠብቅ ሀገራዊ ማዕከል ባለመኖሩ ነው፡፡

የኢትዮጵያ ቤተ ክርስቲያን በእምነት ሕግጋቷ የምትቀበላቸውን ብቻ ሳይሆን የማትቀበላቸውን ድርሳናት እና ቅርሶች ጭምር ለትውልድ አቆይታለች፡፡ በመርጦ ለማርያም የሚገኘው «የግራኝ አሕመድ ካባ»፣ ከሕንድ ወደ ግእዝ የተተረጎመው የሕንዶች የእምነት እና የፍልስፍና መጽሐፍ «መጽሐፈ በርለዓም»፣ የአሪስቶትልን፣ የፕሉቶን እና የሶቅራጥስን ፍልስፍና የያዘው «አንጋረ ፈላስፋ»፣ ግብጽ እንዴት በዓረቦች እንደ ተወረረች የሚገልጠው «የአንድ አባት ዘገባ»፣ እና ሌሎችንም መጥቀስ ይቻላል፡፡

ለዚህም ነው የኢትዮጵያ ቤተ ክርስቲያን ቅርሶች ጉዳይ የሃይማኖት ጉዳይ ብቻ የማይሆነው፡፡ በቤተ ክርስቲያኒቱ እምነት እና ሥርዓት የማይስማሙ ወገኖች እንኳን በሀገሪቱ ጥቅሞች እና ክብሮች ላይ እስከ ተስማሙ ድረስ እነዚሀን ቅርሶች የመጠበቅ እና የማስጠበቅ ኃላፊነት አለባቸው የሚባለው፡፡


የኢትዮጵያ ቤተ ክርስቲያን የሀገሪቱን ባሕል እና ታሪክ ለትውልድ ካቆየችባቸው መንገዶች አንዱ ሥዕሎቿ ናቸው፡፡ በዚያ ፎቶ ግራፍ እና ፊልም ባልነበረበት ዘመን የነበረውን ባሕል፣ሥርዓት እና ታሪካዊ ሁነቶች የምናገኘው በቤተ ክርስቲያን መጻሕፍት እና ግድግዳ ላይ በሚገኙ ሥዕሎች ነው፡፡

ለምሳሌ በሆሎታ ኪዳነ ምሕረት ቤተ ክርስቲያን ግድግዳ ላይ የሚገኙት እና ከ100 ዓመታት በላይ ያስቆጠሩት ሥዕላት ለዚህ ምስክር ናቸው፡፡ ከአዲስ አበባ 44 ኪሎ ሜትር በሆሎታ ከተማ የምትገኘው ይህች ቤተ ክርስቲያን በዐፄ ምኒሊክ አማካኝነት በ1895 ዓም የተገነባች ሲሆን ታቦቷ የገባችው በዚሁ ዓመት የካቲት 16 ቀን ነው፡፡ ሥዕሉን የሳሉት አለቃ ሐዲስ መሆናቸውን ከመቅደሱ ምሥራቃዊ ግድግዳ ላይ ከሣሉት ሥዕል ላይ «ለዛቲ ሥዕል እንተ ሰዓላ አለቃ ሐዲስ እም ቤተ ሌዊ፣ ወዘተምህረ በጎንደር» በሚለው ማስታወሻቸው ይታወቃል፡፡

ሰዓሊው የቤተ ክህነቱን እና የቤተ መንግሥቱን ወግ እና ሥርዓት በሚገባ የሚያውቁ መሆናቸውን በአሣሣላቸው ይታወቃል፡፡ ለምሳሌ ወለተ ሄሮድያዳን ሲሥሏት አለባበሷን እና የፀጉር አቆራረጧን ኢትዮጵያዊ አድርገውታል፡፡ ሹሩባ ተሠርታለች፣ነጭ ሻሽ አሥራለች፣ አሸንክታብ ሠትራ እስክስታውን ታስነካዋለች፡፡ የሄሮድስን የቤተ መንግሥት ሥርዓት ሲስሉት በምኒሊክ ቤተ መንግሥት ሥርዓት መሠረት ነው፡፡ ይህም በዘመኑ የነበረውን የቤተ መንግሥት ወግ እንደ ዶክመንታሪ ፊልም ለታሪክ ያስቀሩበት ሥዕል ነው፡፡ ብርሌው፣ቢላዋው፣የእንጀራው አጣጣል፣ሙዳ ሥጋው የዘመኑን የግብር ሥርዓት በሚገባ ነው የሚያሳየው፡፡





በዚሁ የግድግዳ ሥዕላቸው ዐፄ ምኒሊክን፣ ልጅ ኢያሱን፣ፊታውራሪ ሀብተ ጊዮርጊስን፣ እቴጌ ጣይቱን ሥሎ አቆይቶናል፡፡

አለቃ ሐዲስ የአድዋን ጦርነት ሂደትም በሥዕላቸው አስቀርተውልን ነበር፡፡ ምን ያደርጋል ታድያ ጣልያን ኢትዮጵያን በያዘበት ጊዜ በ1929 ዓም የሥዕሉን ሁኔታ ሰማ፡፡ የአካባቢው የጣልያን ገዥዎች ወደ ቤተ ክርስቲያን ገብተው ሥዕሉን ልጠው ወሰዱት፡፡ በምትኩም «ቡዜቶ ዳንቴ» በሚባል ሰዓሊ ማንነቱ የማይታወቅ የአንድ ሰው ሥዕልና ፣የቅዱስ ጊዮርጊስን ሥዕል በጣልያን ባህል መሠረት አስሳሉበት፡፡ ይህ አጋጣሚ የኢትዮጵያ ቤተ ክርስቲያንን ሥዕሎች ታሪካዊ ፋይዳ የሚያመለክትና በሀገሪቱ ላይ የሚመጡ ታሪካዊ ጠላቶች ሁሉ በዚህች ቤተ ክርስቲያን ላይ ያላቸውን አመለካከት ያሳያል፡፡
ኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ አንድ ቤተ ክርስቲያን ተቃጠለ ማለት «ጣራ እና ግድግዳ ያለው የማምለኪያ ቦታ ተቃጠለ» ማለት ብቻ አይደለም፡፡ «የኢትዮጵያ አንዱ አካሏ፣ ምናልባትም ዋናው አካሏ ተቃጠለ» ማለት ጭምር ነው፡፡ «ኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ የአንድ ቤተ ክርስቲያን ግድግዳ ፈረሰ፣ተበላሸ፣ውኃ ገባበት፣ተሰነጠቀ ማለት የአንድ ሺ ዓመት ታሪካዊ ድርሳን ላይተካ ወደመ» ማለት ነው፡፡

    የዓለም ግሣንግስ በጭንቅላቴ ውስጥ ገብቶ ሳይሠገሠግ፤ ድሮ ድሮ ገና የዘጠኝ ዓመት ልጅ እያለሁ ለፍልሰታ ለማርያም ቁርባን ለመቁረብ ተሰልፈን እያለን ልክ የቁርባን ሰዓት ሲደርስ ሰልፍ ለመያዝ ትርምስ ሆነ! የልጅ ነገር «እኔ ነኝ የምቀድመው እኔ ነኝ የምቀድመው» ከአንድ ጉዋደኛዬ ጋር ጠብ ሆነ። በክርኑ የሁዋሊት ሲቦቅሰኝ አፍንጫዬ ደም በደም!። ቤተሰቦቼ ደግሞ «ቤተ ክርስቲያን ውስጥ ከክርስቶስ ደም በሰተቀር ሌላ ደም አይፈስም» ሲሉ እሰማ ስለነበር እኔ በቤተ ክርስቲያን ውስጥ ደሜን አፍስሼ ለመቁረብ ብቀርብ መቀሰፍን ፈራሁ። በትርምሱ መካከልም በነጠላዬ አፍንጫዬን ጠራርጌ በክቡ ቤተ ክርስቲያን ከሰልፉ ጋር አብሬ ስነዳ ምንም እንኩዋን ደሜን ያዬብኝ ቄስ ባይኖርም ዙሪያውን የነበሩ ዐይነ ትላላቅ ስዕላት እኔን ብቻ የሚያዩኝ መስሎኝ ከራሴ ጋር ጦርነት ሆነ። በግድግዳው ዙሪያ ግጥም ብለው የተሳሉ ስዕላት ምስክር ሆነው ቢያጋልጡኝስ ምን እሆናለሁ?ትልቅ ስጋት ሆነብኝ። እንዳልቆርብ ብቀሰፍስ? ብዬ ፈራሁ፣ ሳልቆርብ ተመልሼ ብወጣ ለወላጆቼ ምን ብዬ ልናገር ነው? በዚያ ላይ ደግሞ ሳልቆርብ በሌላ በር ከወጣሁ ያቺ በጣም የምናፍቃትን በሩ አጠገብ በደረጃው ዙሪያ ቆመው እነ እማሆይ የሚሰጡንን መክፈልት ላልበላ ነው። በዚህ ሙግት መካከል ከሰልፉ ጋር ስነዳ ስነዳ ራሴን ከአባ ቁሱ ፊት አገኘሁትና ቆርቤ ወጣሁ፣ መክፈልቴንም በላሁ፣ ስዕላቱም ሳይመሰክሩብኝ አለፉልኝ።

    Church paintings are primary historical sources. Our history and culture is stamped in these pictures .Taking care of such heritages means taking care of our identity. We can still see the past through the eyes of these pictures.
    Such drawings transfer ancient knowledge to the current society. The wall designs inside the cave church of Washa Micahel ( North welo) can be excellent testimony .Beside its spiritual significance, icons and drawing in the church reveal something extra. Many researchers are studying to decode the secret meaning of the designs on the roof of Abrha Atsbha church, the ceiling of Lalibela ,and the wall of Selestu Denagil and etc . Ancient secret messages are also transmitted in the form of such arts.
    Who else can keep his house except the owner himself?

  6. Dear Daniel,
    You brought an important and timely topic on the Holy Icons of our Church.
    I have the following comment on this topic.
    It has been a trend nowadays that any person can bring any icon to church and be used for worship services.

    Icons are like sacraments where the Power of God can be transferred to the faithful if one prays to the icon in faith.
    Especially, we should be very careful to the icons which enter to the church. Even if the icons are painted based on Ethiopic icon style,we should be very careful on the sanctity of the icon. I heard an interview from the iconographer from the Russian church that when he paints those icons he fasts and prays. Why he did that because this icons will be a channel for the faithefull for the Power of God to pass through.
    Also, on top of being painted with fasting and prayer they will be consecrated with the Holy Myron and they will be Holy 'Newaye Kedesate'.

    I tell you one experience that occured in the Alexanderian church in ohio which happened in 1990. A bishop was telling a mircle that occured in his diocese in egypt in the evening prayers. when he is telling this miracles the icons of virgin Mary and Our Lord Jesus Christ start to secret Holy oil. The miracle was witnessed at that time by the media and many people. It was noticed that the oil came only from the conscrated icons not on nonconsecrated icons.

    See, Icons are not just put in church just because a person painted them beautifully. Ofcourse,when we enter the church we see from the icons the life of the saints thier struggle thier ascetiscm their martyrdom. But, those Icons are and Should be a channel where the Power of God can be transffered to us (I am saying this only to those who become 'Newaye Kidasat' and put in the church walls).

    So, the Fathers of our church has to scrutnize and examine carefully about the icons in our church and make sure about the sanctity of the Icons.

    So, in summary when Icons which should be painted for the Church purpose has to be painted(actually we don't say 'paint an icon' but we say 'write an icon' ) in Fasting and prayer with repentance. Second, the Icons should be conscrated by our Fathers the Bishops.
    That way the Icons become a channel for our prayer to be heard, for our sickness to healed.

    የቅድስት ቤተክርስቲን ቅዱሳት ሰዕላት በእውነት በጣም ግሮም ናቸው ፡፡ እኔ ባለሁበት በደሴ መድኀኒዓለም ቤተክርስቲያን ቅድስቱ ግርግዳ ላይ መመልከት በራሱ በአንድ ጊዜ ብዙ ማንበብ ነው ፡፡ ስዕላቱንም ለመጠበቅ ጥረት ይደረጋል በዚህም መልካም ሆኒታላይ ይገኛል ፡፡ ለመፍትሂው መረባረብ አለብን ፡፡በቤተክርስቲያኑ አመራሮችና በሰበት ትምህርት ቤት ተማሪዎች የቤተክርስቲያኑን ቅደስት ሙሉ በሙሉ በጠንካራ ላስቲክ ተሸፍኑ ይገኛል ፡፡ ከዚህ የተሸለ ካለ . . . . .

  9. No words to appreciate your commitment for the church and the country. Let God give you half of my age which I am not using properly. It was almost after a month of my first vist that I have heared Mehal Zeghie Giorgis burned down.I was in a great headache for more than a day. I was in an illusion whether right or not I have heared.I couldn't forgot those most sacred, impressive and narrative paintings on the internal walls of the church. I couldn't forgot the Architecture of the church. I couldn't forgot the honesty of the clergy.

    while I was in the vist one of the guides asked me from where I am, Europe or America. No, I said I am from Addis. He was impressed and said if an Ethiopian came and visit such places then he must be from the diaspora or a rare case.This was also the comment of all other foriegners there. I have also seen that all the visitors was from abroad. But a number of people was entertaining around the beachs of lake Tana.

    Let God help us to know, protect and pass to the next generation our countless heritages of Paintings, Litrature, Architecture and all the wisdom.

  10. infact, EOTC is z treasury of ethiopian history and culture.but they r in an alarming stage.besides z problem u mentioned above, other factors like poor handling by z clergies,insects,changing weather condition is damaging our holy heritage highly.thus,we should rush to z solution.i would like to give suggestions which will be implemented by our selves:
    1. we should educate our priests as to how they have to handle all tresures in z church
    2. we need to build a treasury house in each church this will gradually become a museum
    3.consisitent preservatiojn work for those paintings and icons on z wall of the church....unless mere talking will brings nothing to our heritage.

The icon where i was born & raised was almost 400 years old & there was some, which showed us satnael( at seaul) with his big eye & big horns which is sacry but u know what happen to that picture after so money years when i go back u can not see any thing & when i asked they told me do u rembere "enemahoy" & some kids it includs me actually try to pinch with there mekumiya?that is what happen when we do no know what we are doing 'cause we hate the picture but it was a good one which can explian how it looks satnael so i am saying here every one needs eduction what ever the pic represents.

    I have no words to express my love for your different articles. I hope many more are learning through your blog and writing on different area. Which we are all learning more about our beloved church. We hear lots of different voice across the universe, however I have not found yet to this moment like your articles which make me to open my eyes more wide, my ears to lister more carfuly than ever.
    I appricated what your contribution to the general socity of Ethiopians liveing across the glob. I pray for your in my daily prayer to be protected to do more specialy for those of us who have been starved a true teaching of EOTC.

  16. ጽሁፉ አጥሩ ቢሆንም አጥሯል ፡፡ይህንንም ያለኩት ስዕሎቹ ከላቸው ታሪካዊ ፋይዳ አንጻር የሚከተሉት ነገሮች ላይ የተወሰነ ነገር ብትጨምርልን ለበለጠ ግንዛቤ ይረዳናል ብዬ አስባለሁ፡-
    1. በኢትዮጵያ ከሚገኙ ገዳማት ወይም አድባራት ውስጥ የትኞቹ ላይ ጥንታውያን ስእላት እንደሚገኙ /ብዙ የስዕል ክምችት ያለባቸው ቦታዎችን ማለቴ ነው/፡፡
    2. እንደገባኝ ከሆነ በኢትዮጵያ ቤተክርስቲያን ውስጥ የሚገኝ አንድ ስዕልን ከይዘት አንጻር በሁለት ከፍለን ማየት እንችላለን ይህም አንደኛ ሃይማኖታዊውን ትምህርት ያንጸባርቃል ሁለተኛ ደግሞ የወቅቱን የሀገሪቱን ታሪክ ይዘክራል፡፡ ስለዚህ ከአሳሳል ሳይሆን ከይዘት አንጻር ስታየው አብዛኛው የቤተክርስቲያን ስዕሎች ምን ያህል የኢትዮጵያን ታሪክ ይገልጻሉ?
    3. እነኝህ ጥንታዊ ስዕላት የሚገኙበት ሁኔታ ምን ይመስላል /ስዕሎቹን ከመንከባከብ አኳያስ ቤተክርስቲያን በአግባቡ ድርሻዋን ተወጥታለች ወይ የነዚህ ጥንታዊ ስዕላት ተጠቃሚ የሆኑ አካላትስ እንዴት ታያቸዋለህ? ለምሳሌ አስጎብኝዎች እና ምእመናንን፤
    4. በኢትዮጵያ ቤተክርስቲያን ታሪክ ውስጥ ‹‹ወርቃማ የስነ ጽሁፍ ዘመን›› ተብሎ የሚታወቅ ዘመን እንደነበረ ሁሉ በቤተክርስቲያኒቱ አገልግሎት ውስጥ የስዕላት መስፋፋት የታየበት ጊዜ ነበር ወይ ፤ እንደዚሁም ከካቶሊካውያን መምጣት ተያይዞ ከአስራ ስድስተኛው ዘመን በኋላ የተሳሉ የቤተክርስቲያኒቱ ስዕሎችን እንዴት ታየዋለህ ? መልካም እና ጎጂ መወራረሶች አልነበሩም ወይ?

People has it that the paintings in each "Branna" book has a clue about the when about of the book and even those who are engaged in smuggling the books took the paintings as an indicator of the year of the book. We know that our forefathers did't do somthing for no purpose ....

  20. Blessings Dani. You could say more about the icones of the EOTC and its current situations. Look during the past time the icones were prepared by people who are matured in the knowledge of the EOTC and the state. In addition those people before they start to print the icones, though they have the talent, skill and grace, they ask for the will of God through prayer even some of them were lived in monasteries aparted from crowd of the environment. Due to all these physical, mental and spritual effort they could prepared all those readable icons. That is why they, the icons, resist all the challenges and connect us with our forefathers. What about now? I afraid. Dear Dani, as the Italians removed the icon that reveal the truth, at present knowingly and un knowingly, the icons that are accoding to the tradition of EOTC have been changed and substituted by others'. Now it became culture to see and use the icons, the cross prepared according to the Roman catholic Church tradition in our church. When we look at the icons of our fathers that are in the church wether we are educated or not, easily we understand it, but some icons which we could find any where creates ambiguity.For example the icon of archangel Reguel with a bird like being. I couldn't find what it represents. Look, gradually if our church filled by an icons of such this I doubt wether the new generation connect in spirit with his foregenerations or not. Dani let me add you one point among my observations. As most of us know the icons of our orthodox church have given a special honor and respect. Our fathers prepared hymns of the icons and we used it,during the church liturgy or at the prayer of hours we upraise incense before the icons.We also cover the icons with special curtain.Even when we go to some rural churches or monasteries there are some places that naked the icons out of their curtain just only for the feast day that parish. All these are done to show our love and respect for the one who represented by that icon and to pass the icons with their full grace and message to the coming generation thought it may benefit from it spritually and in his secular life. But now in most of the churches of that found in cities and towns icons have hanged or fastened to the outer wall of the churches faced to sun,rain,wind... which accelerates its destroy. This is done to attract the believers to put money in the box that is found under the icons.This incident has many negative aspects. It is not our church's rite, gradually the church will lost her heritages, the believers also lose their internal respect to their rites, in turn this will help some to develop negative courage to steal the blessed church materials. So we have to give a great attention to any church icons and other related blessed materials. We have not wait a solution from other party, or we have not forward the message of Daniel to somebody whom we feel is responsible. It is we who are responsible to make our church history and also to keep what accept from our fathers and mothers.

    I had visited an open exhibition in the premise of Ethiopian Orthodox Church Betekhenet Headquarter some 2 years back and I remember very exotic ancient paintings of our church which I have not seen in any ordinary areas. Those paintings are very different and I believe the other world is never familiar with. Is there any book print of those collections to be purchased or may be they are confidential heritages not to be exposed?

  22. May God bless you, dear beloved true son of our Church, Dn Daniel. I read the article and found it so, interesting. Some comments are given as the article is too short. But to me it is a good start if we have that gut to join a hand and stand to save these icons to stay safe and pass to the next generation with its full meaning. "አበው ለጠቢብሰ አሐቲ ቃል ትበቁኦ" ይሉ የለ. After reading the article and all comments one thing comes to my mind, some of my brothers (fathers) gave a solution above in their comments, But I found it untouchable or ዝርው unless a formal procedure is followed. Teaching our fathers ... where? keeping the originality, spiritual and cultural meanings of the icons... how and where? are my questions. In addition, I see some emotionalities in the readers (i am the first) of Dn Danies blog, we are touched by his expressions and may also be in tears while reading and then forget to step up to bring his arguments in to practices. So, for where to teach our fathers and where to raise (train) the true writers of Holy Icons according to the teaching and heritage of our fathers and church canon, there should be a school. This school, which I proposed, should be established by we the readers of this blog and others who have the love of the church in their heart. So, let's unit and start immediately. If we start today, we may see the result some other time by the help of God. In my thought (may be poor and not well organized)this is the way that we transfer the holy icons to the upcoming generation. Otherwise, as mentioned by one commenter, the icons which are not according to our church canon and teaching will dominate and may become so difficult to convince the upcoming generation as they are not according to our church canon. Also the believers of the church use these exotic icons in their home and brings to the church for there is no alternatives. For the 'true' once are rare and so expensive. I make true in a quotation mark for I doubt if they are written (drawn) by fasting and fear of God. Some are just ment to make money. So, the solution as to me is establishing that school is vital. So, who should take the lead? Dn Daniel would you please say something? You all beloved readers please comment on the idea and let's go for solution. To me learning alone is not a goal unless we bring those things into practice.

  24. ስለ መንፈሳዊ ስዕሎቻችን ፋይዳ እና በአሁኑ ጊዜ እየተሰጣቸው ስላለው ክብር ጥበቃና እንክብካቤ ብዙ ማለት ይቻላል፡፡ ብዙዎች አስተያየት እንደሰጡት በዚህ አንገብጋቢ አርዕስት ላይ የተፃፈው እና ምን መደረግ አለበት የሚለው በዝርዝር አልተገለጸም፤ ስለሆነም በሌላ ጊዜ ዲያቆን ዳንኤል ይመለስበታል ብዬ ተስፋ አደርጋለሁ፡፡

    መፍትሄው አሁንም በኢትዮጵያ ቀኖና መሰረት (ስዕል አሳሳል ስርአትም የመንፈስ ዝግጅትም ስላለው ) የሚስሉ አባቶችና ወንድሞች አሉ :: በጸሎት መንፈስ ሆነው ቅዱሳት ስዕላትን ዛሬም ይስላሉ:: እነዚህን ማበረታታትና በነዚህ ሰዎች ስዕል እያሳሉ በካህን አስባርኮ ለቤተክርስቲያን በመባ መልክ መስጠት የሁሉም ዜጋ ሀላፊነት ሊሆን ይገባል ::"

    I am really worried about the influx of the so called spiritual pictures which are flooding the markets in Ethiopia.In my opinion most of these pictures are tools for mind colonialists.Please lat us appreciate our meaningful,highly spiritual,rich in symbolization and philosophical church paintings of ours.God willing I will try to contribute something about this issue in the future.

  29. This is the one Great solution. This is originally from a foreigner as he has shared it with me. He has constructed a digital architecture of a monastery. Then he took the photo of all icons on each wall. Together with the short description and biblical message of the picture, he then included it in the model. Another feature of the model is that one can take a virtual tour in the church. I have his work in a CD. Any one interested, we can research on ways to replicate it for churches in Ethiopia.
